Who is John-Erling?
I am a professional cinematographer, working mainly with narrative projects for cinema, streaming and broadcast. I was born in Tromsø, Norway in 1985, but grew up on the island of Senja. Tromsø is where I got my start in filmmaking, exploring the art form together with a generation of filmmakers that include director Ole Giæver and cinematographers Marte Vold, Torkel Riise Svenson and Martin Edelsteen. I later attended The Norwegian Film School, and graduated in 2012.

What is a cinematographer?
A cinematographer is a close collaborator to the director of a film. An artist in charge of the look, specifically framing and lighting, as well as a contributor on blocking of actors in relation to camera position and movement. This job is usually carried out together with a team of specialists including the 1st AC, gaffer, key grip and several technicians. But I also work low key with minimal equipment and crew. My expertise include a deep knowledge of dramaturgy, working with actors, preparing a coherent visual concept and executing a shoot on schedule.

Where do you work?
I am based in Oslo, Norway, but I shoot projects worldwide. I specifically enjoy traveling and meeting new cultures and people, and to learn while telling new stories. My projects have so far taken me across Europe the Middle East and Africa, and I’m looking forward to wherever life takes me in the future.

Do you only shoot narrative?
I’ve specialized in long form narrative, as this was my main interest to begin with. I grew up watching movies from all over the world at the yearly Tromsø International Film Festival which exposed me to arthouse and less commercial projects that inspired me greatly. I do however also shoot commercials, short films, music videos and art projects, and will always consider these kinds of projects if I’m in between longer narrative productions.

Where can I see your work?
My work, like most movies and series these days, are spread around different outlets. You’ll find my movies in theaters or festivals when they’re fresh, and usually later on different streaming platforms or to purchase physically or digitally. I have a few works available worldwide on streamers like Netflix, both series and movies. Some of my short films and less commercial projects are unfortunately not available anywhere anymore. Feel free to reach out if you want to see something specific, and I might be able to help!
